Adult (Faith) Formation

What We Offer

The Church of the Ascension's Adult Faith Formation Committee seeks to provide learning opportunities through bible studies, prayer groups, faith sharing groups, our annual parish mission, our RCIA program (see 'Become a Catholic' in the Ministry tab), our weekly Wednesday Soup Suppers during Lent, and various other occasions throughout the year.  On this page, we will post upcoming adult faith education events in our parish!

The Adult Faith Formation Committee presents Ascension Press' 8 week study, Walking Towards Eternity: Engaging the Struggles of Your Heart by Jeff Cavins!  Walking Toward Eternity is an inspiring series designed to help participants live their faith more fully. Through daily prayerful meditation with Scripture (lectio divina), you will be drawn into an intimate and life-changing encounter with Christ.  Engaging the Struggles of Your Heart, the second series in the Walking Toward Eternity Program, is a challenging study that can open our eyes to obstacles in our Christian walk such as greed, envy, fear and shame. Through prayer, reflection, guidance, and the aid of the Holy Spirit, we begin to engage these difficulties in a positive way as we continue toward our goal of union with Christ.

WEEKLY BOOK CLUB SUNDAYS, NOV. 19, 2017 TO FEB. 18, 2018 from 9:45-10:30 AM:

The Adult Faith Formation Committee will host a WEEKLY book club discussion group at The Hot Spot Coffee House in Johnstown, during the PSR hour, from 9:45 to 10:30 AM beginning Sunday, 11/19/17.  The book we will cover is Resisting Happiness (2016) by Matthew Kelly, which can be rented from the library, or purchased on or other retailers for around under $10*.  Each week, you'll read the assigned chapters listed below (totaling only about 15 pages each week!) before the meeting, then we'll discuss those chapters as a group.  You do NOT have to attend every week, but please reserve your place in the group ASAP so that we can determine if multiple groups will be necessary.

Resisting Happiness takes a look at why we sabotage our own happiness -- and what to do about it.  We hope you will join us for a cup of coffee and a weekly group discussion about this dynamic book.

*Please note: If you are financially unable to obtain a copy, the Adult Faith Formation committee will sponsor one for you if notified by 11/13/17.
